Malvern isn’t necessarily a place you’d associate with the shiny packaging you see on luxury branded products. But for Ian Rocke, Managing Director of Foiling Services, it’s all in a day’s work.
As Ian himself admits, foiling is very much a niche industry. The company was established in 2005 and provides decorative foiling and laminating services to a variety of markets and industries. This involves applying decorative and functional hot transfer foils, PVC films, protection films and self-adhesive tapes to a range of materials. Their specialist finishes can be seen on everything from perfume displays and shelf liners for supermarkets to washrooms in modular construction buildings such as hotels and student accommodation. They even add some extra glitz to dance floors for the events industry. Plus there’s the more unusual commissions such as some bright green metallic place mats for an England v Ireland rugby dinner in 2013.
Having acquired two units at Link Business Centre in April, one has been designated for manufacturing purposes and the other is the office and storage area. It’s very much a family business with Ian’s wife and business partner Lizzie working in the office with him. Their son Cameron also works on the manufacturing side of things along with Chris their technician.
‘Basically we work with manufacturers of point of sale displays’ says Ian ‘We also supply the rest of the plastics industry with whatever it is they ask for. That could include some protective film or patterned foil or whatever they might need.’
When it comes to single use plastics, the question of sustainability comes to mind but Ian explains that pretty much all they do is recyclable. Waste products can be returned for recycling and most of the foil will be recycled for heat generation.
Meanwhile Ian and Lizzie are both happy in their new location. ‘It’s a nice little community here and it suits our needs’ says Ian ‘Martin and Richard are certainly more hands-on than our previous Landlords and if there are any issues these are resolved quickly’
